Cadiz Bay Natural Park

It is the major area where aquatic birds of the province of Cadiz hibernate and together with the river Guadalquivir it is also one of the most important in the Iberian Peninsula.The number of birds in the bay is estimated in 45.000 aproximately, with more than 200 species.
The observation of these birds in Cadiz Bay is very significant in winter mainly in the seasoning migratory settings ( from February to March and from August to October)


SYSTEM OF PROTECTION: Natural Park (1.989), Ramasar Site (2.002), ZEPA.
LOCATION: It is expanded all along the territories of El Puerto de Santa María, Puerto Real, Chiclana, San Fernando, and Cadiz, between 36º 23’ and 36º 36’ latitude north and 6º 08’ and 6º 15’ west length.
EXTENSION: 10.000 hectares.
ALTITUDE: At sea level.

Pines ( Pinus pinea ) and barrones ( Ammophila arenaria ) are widespread in these dunes and beaches. In salt-marsch carrizos (Phragmites communis ), espadañas( (Typha latifolia ) and castanets ( Scirpus maritimus ) are very common..Wigeon (Anas penelope). Photo by C. Lopesino & J. Hidalgo.

BIRDFAUNA: In the Bay of Cadiz the existence of very important spanish colonies such as Litle Terns , Blac-winged Stilts and Avocets are frequently encountered.
There are Greater Flamingos and Spoonbills .
Ducks, Mallards, Geese, Coots, Seagulls, Shangs, Herons, Phalacrucorax and [limícolas] live in the area too.
